Is photography art? If so what makes ‘Art Photography?”
Can it be argued that photography is a mechanical form of reproduction set within limits unlike other forms of art requiring the physical and creative skills of the artist, or can it be argued that the settings, composition, and lighting which have been predetermined make photography ‘art’ and if so where do we draw the line between what is, ‘art photography’ a snapshot taken on a iPhone, or digital manipulation.
These are some of the issues raised by the group ‘Portfolio’ who’s exhibition “Portfolio One” will be premiering at the Coterie Gallery from Monday 3rd to Friday 28th February 2014.‘Portfolio’ is a small group of like minded photographers who believe the epithet ‘art’ is wholly justified when applied to photography and with a mandate to develop by practice, discussion, and criticism, lay themselves open though exhibition to critiquing by the most demanding of all critics, you the viewer.
Taking part are Michael Gleave, Colin New, Janet Thorpe, Ron Walker and Ian Wilde from whom prints may be obtained, or through the gallery.
The exhibition can be seen at the Coterie Gallery, Pack Horse Lane, High Green, Sheffield S35 3HY, from the 3rd to 28th February 2014 and has Free Entry and Parking, Full disabled access and facilities, Craft Shop, Café, and is open Monday – Friday 9am-5pm
