Eurydice Lost from the Odyssey series by Anthony Carroll. 2012 oil on canvas. 40cm x 40cm

Eurydice, a nymph of striking beauty, met a tragic end that would forever be intertwined with the tale of Orpheus, her heartbroken husband. While wandering through a meadow, her delicate foot inadvertently disturbed a viper’s nest. The startled serpent, in a swift and deadly strike, sank its fangs into her ankle. The venom coursed through her veins, and despite Orpheus’s desperate pleas and attempts to heal her, Eurydice succumbed to the poison. Her lifeless body was carried to the underworld, leaving Orpheus devastated and consumed by grief. His sorrow would lead him on a perilous journey to the depths of Hades in a desperate attempt to bring his beloved Eurydice back to the land of the living.
